Can't wait to torture myself watching Chelsea play again on Tuesday (not).
An extra place thing you're thinking of goes back to when Liverpool won the Champions League but failed to qualify for next season's competition by finishing 5th. Initially Everton [4th] were kicked out, but Everton appealed to UEFA that this was the second time UEFA had done this, having kicked Everton out of the UEFA cup in the 70s and gave their spot to a lower team because they wouldn't allow two teams from the same city [Liverpool finished one place above Everton that season] to compete. UEFA changed the rules on that the following year and admitted that to do the same thing to Everton again would be pretty shitty, so gave a one off allowance for five English teams to play in the ECL. However, they slammed the door firmly shut on it ever happening again, literally saying that UEFA owed Everton one for what happened in the early 70s. Even then, that situation doesn't apply this year as City wont finish outside the top four.
